Planet Burrito is as good as or Better than Chipotle … OMG!!!
December 8th, 2008
I grew up on crappy frozen bean burritos. As an adult, I had no desire to ever eat a burrito until I tried Chipotle. Chipotle made me fall in love with the burrito and more importantly … with the burrito bowl.
I tried other burrito places. Moe’s is fine. Thunderbirds is not something I’d ever like to put in my mouth again. Chipotle rocks because the ingredients are clearly top notch. I quickly grew very reluctant, very quickly to try any burrito made by any restaurant other than Chipotle.
So week after week we passed by this Planet Burrito place. It didn’t help that the place never seemed to attract a crowd. We were skeptics.
Tonight we went. Chipotle is further away than we wanted to drive so we gave Planet Burrito a shot, and my goodness, I’m glad we did! A more diverse menu than Chipotle’s isn’t usually a good thing. Chipotle is the Apple of burrito restarants. Chipotle keeps it simple and elegant. Planet Burrito has many, many more options, but they aren’t standard … they’re interesting. If you’re a real carnivore, you have to be drawn to the idea of a Buffalo Chicken Burrito Bowl. As a proud Texan, I hate to admit … I was drawn to the Californian.
The Californian is Grilled Steak marinated in Pineapple and Lime Juice, with Monterey Jack Cheese, Cilantro Lime Rice, Black Beans, Romaine (I had them hold the Romaine), Tomatoes, Fresh Lime Juice, Red Onions, Toasted Garlic, Avocado (I had them hold the Avocado), and Zesty Garlic Lime Sauce. OH MY FREAKING GOODNESS!!! It’s one of the best things I’ve ever had in my life.
Cali Lewis ordered the Buffalo Chicken Burrito Bowl. I tasted hers. She tasted mine. We both were impressed by mine more. They serve breakfast burritos including a megas option. We’re probably going to be eating there frequently and will definatly be eathing at the further away Chipotle less.
Planet Burrito tops Chipotle and that is something I never thought I’d say.
I have to say their Web site sucks, though. It’s old-school and has a bunch of liberal nonsense about saving the planet. Honestly, I’m not looking to a burrito joint to save the planet. The planet isn’t quite so delecate and global warming is a hoax so the whole “save the planet” thing needs to go. It seems like pandering to idiots who wouldn’t be attracted to burritos anyway.
In all honesty the best thing we can do for the planet is to encourage Planet Burrito to open a location in every single place there is a Starbucks.

I am glad to hear you ventured to a place other than Chipotle. The growing up on crappy frozen bean burritos answers a few questions about loving Chipotle. Out here in California that place is terrible. Qdoba is currently my favorite burrito place but that is mainly because we do not yet have a 360 Gourmet Burrito store in my city.

I had to go check the web site to see if there was one near me. Of course, there isn’t. Only two, in Texas. Sigh. But yeah, the site is pretty hard on the eyes. “Planet Burrito Awareness Bracelets”? I have no words.

Chipoltle is fantastic (mmmmm burrrrito bowl)…Freebirds is up there if not better (it’s been at least a year or so though since I’ve had one)

I always used to go to Chipotle when we traveled to parts of the country where they were located (Dallas and Atlanta come to mind). Then a Qdoba opened in Tulsa, and I got hooked on them. Finally, Chipotle opened here, too, but I have to say I have only eaten there a handful of times. Qdoba has really won me over.

I came venturing over to the Carnivore site from geekbrief when my husband (who’s got a sweet little fun crush on Cali Lewis) told me you two like Chipotle. I had to see if it was true — if Cali & share more than just Jason’s affection. It seems we also share a love of Chipotle!
Since we’re in San Diego, we’ll just have to take your word for it and keep slummin’ at Chipotle since we don’t have Burrito Planet nearby. At least we’ll be happy in our burrito ignorance!
And we’re totally in agreement on the hoax matter, too. Thanks for the chuckle & the camaraderie there!
Keep on rockin’ in the free world!
Maybe I’ll see you at Macworld next week!

I shall have to give Planet Burrito and Qdoba a chance next time I’m near one of them, but I seriously doubt they will knock Chipotle out of its spot as my favorite source of burrito. As far as I can tell, Chipotle’s chicken is marinated in dark magic, and combined with their black beans, cheese, hot sauce and rice it is a meal I could eat every day till I die (of a heart attack). Freebird’s is okay, and I like that Blaze’n Burrito has big TVs with live sports, but neither has come close to a Chipotle burrito.

Let me give another quick shout for Qdoba. In my edge of the netiverse there are no Planet Burrito’s but there are several Chipotle’s. Qdoba over Chipotle any day of the week.
Finally! Someone who shares my thoughts on global warming! W00t!

Michael, if/when you stumble upon a Qdoba, make sure you try a shredded beef burrito. I have enjoyed other items there, but I always come back to that one.
I’m thrilled that here in the Tulsa area, we now have 5 Qdobas, including one only about 4 miles from my house. We still only have one (very small) Chipotle.

Living in Albuquerque I don’t have places like Planet Burrito, Qdoba, or Chipotle to go to. Just this short list of my favorite burritos around town (and many more available) Acapulco Tacos & Burritos (red meat & bean, green all meat, chili relleno, chorizo & egg), Padilla’s (carne adovada), Sadie’s (carne adovada), which are clearly superior to anything else, of course, being New Mexican.
Texas has made one superior contribution to border cuisine, fajitas, and California, tacos. Though I quite liked the green tomatillo sauce on enchiladas at Los Gueros in Barstow, CA.

I will admit to the occasional trip down to Chipotle for Carnitas taco’s and there doesn’t seem to be a Planet Burrito near Round Rock, but Freebird’s is still the ultimate burrito in Texas.
For those that found the monster lacking, I fear the problem is the sissified assembly line in the new franchise. Burrito’s are not health food, so skip the orange, gluten-free, low-fat, chipotle tortilla. For the real Freebird experience, pick the least healthy option at each station and “just say no” at the salad bar.

Забавно, обычно все пишут как надо делать. Учат всему на свете, а своих ошибок не замечают. А здесь такое самолинчевание.
