BBQ Emergency!!!
July 23rd, 2008
When we started producing GeekBrief.TV, we were living above a store we opened for Extra Space Storage in Highland Park, IL. At the same time we opened our store, Jim Lederer and Chef Dave Teichman opened Bluegrass, a neighborhood restaurant with beyond words amazing food. Jim and Dave fed us well, served us great martinis and kind of turned us into food snobs (in a good way). Chili’s and Red Lobster is awesome until you know better. Thanks to Jim and Dave … we know better.
This morning we got a dire notice in the Inbox about a BBQ Emergency:
Bluegrass Restaurant is having a BBQ Fest to combat the constant construction on Old Deerfield Road. Chef Dave has decided to get out the BBQ and do some real smoking with his grills. We will be BBQ’ing for two weeks straight to get the word out that we are still here. If you see smoke please be aware it is only our smoker smoking the Ribs.
You don’t have to know us very much to know THIS kind of humor is OUR kind of humor. We’re rallying around our friends, packing our bags and heading to Chicago. This is a BBQ emergency and we can’t resist.
We’ll be blogging about the trip here and at BigTrip.TV. There will be video and if you can make it to Highland Park to join us, there will be meat.
The official meetup will be at Bluegrass in Highland Park, IL at 5PM (July 27, 2008). Please leave a comment on this post so we can let Jim and Dave know how many people to expect. I’m going to try and get my sister to come!

Wish I could join you! If I hadn’t already spent my spur of the moment airline money for the month, I’d be thinking about it.
Looking forward to some good video out of this - make us feel like we’re there! Drive safe and have a great Little Trip!

Will you be inviting them back down here afterward for some authentic Texas BBQ?
Comment by John Hays — July 23, 2008 @ 3:02 pm
Beer, Brats and Cali? What could be better! Count me in (and guest?).
Comment by Anthony "Gorilla" Koyer — July 23, 2008 @ 3:31 pm
I work close to Highland Park, but I didn’t know about Bluegrass (I’m still new to the suburbs — I’m a city girl). This sounds like fun — I’ll likely be checking it out, and will drag the boyfriend along, too.
Comment by Bleu Caldwell — July 23, 2008 @ 3:45 pm
Wooohooo…BBQ n Cali (Not Forgettin Niel) aight hope to stop by and grab some fun.
Comment by Sean Davine — July 23, 2008 @ 8:41 pm
So far I have 15 RSVPs and 5 “I’ll try to be there”s. I’d love to fill the restaurant, keep ‘em coming!
Comment by Cali Lewis — July 23, 2008 @ 9:03 pm
I am pretty sure I can come, at least for a meetup, but I would probably be toating kids as the wife I am pretty sure is working that day.
Comment by Richard Ashwell — July 23, 2008 @ 9:07 pm
@Richard Yeah!! I’d love if you can come. The restaurant is very family friendly, so bring the kids along.
Comment by Cali Lewis — July 23, 2008 @ 9:17 pm
I would so love to be there, but my sister is home from Nashvegas this weekend. Otherwise, I’d make the trip from rockford.
Comment by Mark — July 24, 2008 @ 12:10 am
Count my wife and I in! Looking forward to it!
Comment by Eric — July 24, 2008 @ 5:27 am
Hey Cali & Neal - I will definitely be there - with my camera. Let me know when you get into town, see if we can meetup before that.

I’ll try to stop by. I’ll have my two kids, 18mo and 4yrs, so it’ll depend a lot on how they’re doing…

Hey we love Bluegrass…great food and great people.
We’ll be there!
If you are looking to get additional food-footage while in Highland Park I’ve got a great little sloppy joe joint just up the hill from Jim’s place. No burgers or bbq….but the best sloppy joes anywhere.
It’s a small neighborhood place dedicated to sloppy joes and we have a huge following. I don’t want to take any attention from Bluegrass, but if you have extra time and need another meal, please stop by.
I also have a website you can check out http://www.sloppyjos.com and you can google me… I mean Sloppy Jo’s Lunchroom to get more information.
Regardless, I’ll see you at Bluegrass ….Yippee! Debi

I’ll try my hardest, we’re about an hour away, but we have a busy schedule… so it’s a maybe!
Comment by Aaron — July 24, 2008 @ 11:02 am
I will try and be there for sure!! I Love BBQ!
Comment by Tom — July 24, 2008 @ 12:32 pm
Sounds like fun! My five year old Jack and myself will be there. - Dan
Comment by Dan Lueders — July 24, 2008 @ 4:33 pm
I’ll so be there. Not a doubt. I’d skip Kevin Rose and the Digg crew in Wrigleyville but Cali and Neal just 19 miles from me, how could I miss it. And it will be my 2nd BBQ of the day. I’ll get to compare Bluegrass to Smoque.
Comment by ChiliMac — July 24, 2008 @ 5:17 pm
We are really looking forward to this event on Sunday! Go easy on lunch to save room for dessert, nothing like good friends and good BBQ…
Comment by Jim Lederer — July 24, 2008 @ 5:37 pm
Hey Cali, too bad this won’t be during the week as it would be two minutes from my office. That being said, I will be there with with my wife and almost 4 year old son ready to eat some BBQ!!! Asked a few people that live close to my office and they said this place is great. Looking forward to the meet-up and some good eats!!! Will respond on Twitter as well once it’s back up, ughh!!!
Comment by Mikeybc — July 24, 2008 @ 7:24 pm
Hey guys, We will for sure be there. Since I am sponsor of the Big Trip I might as well sponsor the Big BBQ (in my home town!!) Oh yea …….

Sorry, Chicago’s just toooo far for us. Love that barbeque, especially beef. Neal, do they barbeque your favorite, bacon? Do they have bluegrass bands at “bluegrass”?
I haven’t seen/heard any live bluegrass music since way back last weekend when Peter Rowan was nearby?
Here’s what I shot there: http://tinyurl.com/574kdy

Comment by Juan Torres — July 26, 2008 @ 9:29 am
I’ll try and make it…too bad the emergency didn’t let us have more time to plan it. I’m sure it’ll be fun anyway!

Who knew Geekbrief tv could replace the Food Network as a reliable source for cuisine that reigns supreme ? I’ve enjoyed following the brief for over a year and was delighted to hear about the meetup just a few miles from where I work. Hadn’t tried Bluegrass before so went Friday to scout it out - it was outstanding! Truly delicious food well-prepared in original ways, with relentlessly attentive service. A delightful evening!
I look forward to joining the meetup Sunday!

I asked my niece - who lives in Lincoln Park - about the french onion soup in Bluegrass and she said it’ s fabulous! There’s also great Mexican food around Ashland and Division. I’ve been considering moving into Old Town and working for her as an assistant web-server administrator. ^..^~
